Today, Design Build Ideas will explore the latest SS19 Accessories range designed by the renowned industrial designer Tom Dixon. The collection premiered at the prestigious lifestyle and design fair, Maison et Objet 2019. The collection is entitled Swirl and is representative of a mysterious new material that takes the form of 3D marbled paper that has the weight of a stone.
The innovative process involves recycling the powdered residue from the marble industry, mixed with pigment and resin to create blocks of material that can then be sawn, sliced and turned on a lathe. Substantial in weight, smooth in texture and bold in a pattern, SWIRL injects a fresh pop sensibility into any setting.
Block and Carved will be two of the most prominent products of the collection. Nevertheless, Tom Dixon has also designed a series of textile range, including Blot, Dash and Stitch. Furthermore, the collection also features bathroom accessories with the Eclectic Bath & Body series. These latest additions to the Tom Dixon family tie into their monochromatic theme which embraces simplicity, purity, materiality, translucency, scale and minimalism in form and function.
Architecturally geometric and highly sculptural, Block is a series of decorative and functional ceramics. Cubic and cylindrical forms are stacked upon each other to create irregular cubist designs to adorn your living spaces. Produced in Portugal, a country that is renowned for its expertise in ceramics, the Block family is slip cast to create a sense of uniformity. The high gloss hand-glaze process adds individuality to each piece.
For the Carved series, mouth-blown, double layered black and white glass has been acutely cut back to define a series of circular motifs. Artisanal glass makers in India carefully carved away layers of glass in a design process that explores the opaque, the translucent and the transparent. The intention was for the chunky and heavy glass to take on an ethereal lightness.
Building on the studio’s scent range, the Eclectic bathroom series now includes a body wash and balm, bath and shower oils and bath salts, which are available in our three signature scents, London, Orientalist and Royalty.
